Everything Emma Needed To Learn About Kindergarten...

She learned from her big sister.     I washed and dried Emma’s hair tonight in preparation for her first day of kindergarten tomorrow. She’s five-years-old and the skinniest thing you’ve ever seen. When she sits in my lap it’s like holding a human Transformer, she folds her arms and legs up and disappears into nothing. She’s tiny. She’s not my youngest, but she’s still my baby. “MOMMA!” She yelled over the hair dryer, “AUBWEY SAID DAT AT HER SCHOOL..” I flipped the hair dryer off so she could talk. “At her school, da wights go on and off by [Read more...]

Momma Breaks Bad

Today didn’t begin very well, which is really more of the same here at the boxing ring that used to be our home. The heat has driven us indoors. We have played games, played school, built forts, gone to the library, gone swimming and my kids are tired and cranky. I have never felt like more of a referee in my life. I have spent the last few weeks disciplining my children constantly. This morning I snapped. Aubrey and Emma had a physical altercation and I. Snapped. I don’t think I have EVER cussed on this blog. But y’all. I [Read more...]

Emma Said: I Meed A Guitar

My five-year-old just said, “Momma, I meed a guitar. I haven’t played one in WEEKS.” Me: Or ever. Emma: I weally need one. With one of those magazines with words on it for all kinds of instruh-mints. My oldest brother is a professional musician (you should follow him on twitter @matthewwiley), my dad and younger brother are total music junkies and guitar players. She comes [Read more...]

Only 27 Days 'Til School Starts

Last week’s newspaper column, just for you. Yes. You. Don’t be fooled by how still they are. This is a picture. That’s how they work.  For the last seven days I have refereed no less than one million fights on less than four hours of sleep per night. My middle child has been sneaking into my bed late at night with her knobby knees and pointy elbows and I am tired. I am supposed to be editing and revising my manuscript and 90 percent of the words I wrote this week were on Facebook or Twitter in the form of SOS [Read more...]

Emma Said: I Wanted To Hold That Baby

Today I ran some errands with all three of my girls. My friend Alexandra and her baby boy, Vonte went with us. We drove all over town dropping off copies of Metro Christian Living at area businesses, we stopped for lunch and ran by the library to sign up for a summer reading program. After we took Alexandra and Vonte home, Emma whined from the third row, “Momma, I weally wanted to hold Alexander!” Aubrey snorted, “Alexan-DRA is the momma, NOT the baby!” I giggled a little with the girls as Emma realized she just said she wanted to hold [Read more...]
